The Ganga Sagar Mela, which is held every year on Makar Sankranti in Ganga Sagar Island of West Bengal, is starting from today. This fair will be held till January 16. Amidst the increasing cases of corona across the country, it seemed that this fair would be canceled, but the Calcutta High Court on Friday gave permission to organize this fair. However, the court has laid down conditions that the corona rules should be strictly followed during the fair.

The dangers of organizing a fair in Bengal are high. The third wave of corona continues in the country. Every day lakhs of cases are coming. 1.41 lakh cases were registered in the country on Friday. 18,213 new cases were found in Bengal, which is the second highest in the country after Maharashtra. Bengal leads in terms of test positivity rate with 26.34% rate. Test positivity rate means how many positives have come out of 100 tests.

High court feared the spread of infection
On Makar Sankranti, thousands of devotees, sages and tourists take a dip in the confluence of river Ganges and Sagar and offer prayers at Kapil Muni Temple. The court had expressed concern that due to so many people taking a dip, the corona virus would spread through the mouth and nose in the river water and there is a possibility of infecting other people.

The government told – both doses of vaccine were taken by everyone in Ganga Sagar
In response to this concern of the court, Advocate General SN Mukherjee, Government of West Bengal informed the court that both the doses of the vaccine have been administered to all the people of Ganga Sagar Island and the test positivity rate is under control here.

The government told the court that it is expected that this year the number of people coming to the fair will not exceed 5 lakhs. So far about 30 thousand people have participated in the fair and about 50 thousand people from all over the country have reached Ganga Sagar.

Court’s instructions to keep Corona under control

  • The court has ordered the state government to form a three-member panel. This will include the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, a representative of the State Government and the Chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission. Together, all three will ensure that Corona standards are being followed in Ganga Sagar Island.
  • If there is any relaxation in the compliance of the rules, then the committee will submit its suggestions to the state government without any delay so that the entry into the island can be closed. The court also said that the Secretary of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission would coordinate with the committee members in this matter.
  • The court has directed the government to declare Sagar Island as a ‘Notified Area’ within 24 hours. By doing this, the state will be able to take steps related to the health and safety of the pilgrims according to the need.
  • The court has ordered the state to ensure that all visitors to the fair wear masks, follow social distancing norms and use sanitisers. All these protocols will be valid for the police personnel, media persons, volunteers and government officials engaged in the management of the fair.
