The post of CBI director has been vacant since February. Presently Additional Director Praveen Sinha is its interim chief.

Discussions have started on the names for the new CBI director. In a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, three names for the new director were short-listed. The panel consists of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

According to sources, a CBI director will be chosen from Uttar Pradesh DGP HC Awasthi, SSB DG Kumar Rajesh Chandra and Home Ministry Special Secretary VSK Kaumudi. This post has been vacant since February. Presently Additional Director Praveen Sinha is the interim head of CBI from 3 February.

Claimant 1- Hitesh Chandra Awasthi
Currently the DGP of Uttar Pradesh. Hitesh Chandra Awasthi, a 1985 batch IPS officer, was given this responsibility a year ago. He also has experience of working in CBI. From 2005 to 2008, he served as DIG and deputy director at the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). He was IG and Joint Director in CBI from 2008 to 2013. Was made Special Secretary in the Home Department of UP twice.

Awasthi was SP of Tehri Garhwal and Haridwar in undivided Uttar Pradesh. Promoted as ADG to DG in 2016. DG was DGP Headquarters, Telecom, Homeguards, Anti Corruption Organization (ACO) and Economic Crime and Research Branch. DG Vigilance was created from 2017. Currently the DGP of UP.

Contender 2 – RK Chandra
IPS officer Kumar Rajesh Chandra is the DG of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). This paramilitary force protects the Indian borders with Nepal and Bhutan. Chandra, a 1985 batch IPS officer of Bihar cadre, has been a director of the Civil Aviation Security Bureau (BCAS) under the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation in Delhi. Post graduate Chandra in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi will retire on December 31, 2021. Chandra has also worked in the Special Protection Group (SPG) protecting the Prime Minister, former PMs and their families.

Contender 3 – VSK Kaumudi
VSK Kaumudi is the Special Secretary (Internal Security) in the Ministry of Home Affairs. Kaumudi is a 1986 batch IPS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre. He has been the director of the Bureau of Police Research and Development. He will retire on 30 November 2022.

Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary objected to the selection process
The meeting started at around 6:30 pm at the Prime Minister’s residence to choose the CBI Director. The meeting lasted 90 minutes. Sources said that Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary objected to the process of selection of officers for the post.

He said the way the procedure was followed was contrary to the majority of the committee. On May 11, I was given 109 names. By Monday afternoon, 10 names were shortlisted by 1 pm and by 4 pm 6 names were shortlisted. The attitude of the Department of Personnel and Training is highly objectionable.
