The National Technical Advisory Group of Immunization (NTAGI) has clarified its stand on the extension of two doses of the Corona vaccine Kovyshield and the vaccine shortage. NTAGI President Dr. NK Arora said that the decisions related to corona vaccine in India are based on scientific evidence. We try to improve the effect of the vaccine on the basis of scientific evidence and we are doing so.
He said that the shortage of vaccine in the country is only for the next six weeks, after that it will not happen. In future, we will have enough vaccines, so that we will be able to vaccinate all the people of the country. We currently have only two vaccines. In the coming days, their number will increase further.
Focus on safety from upcoming variants as well
Dr. Arora said that we are taking necessary steps to keep the vaccine as effective as possible. Our effort is to keep the country safe from the variants coming with the current wave of Corona. We know that Corona will stay for a short time, so we are constantly making sure that people are safe.
The risk of re-infection is significantly reduced in 3-4 months
- According to NTAGI’s recommendations, two research focuses – one from the UK and the other from the US. Both research suggests that antibodies develop in people after corona infection, after which the likelihood of re-infection decreases to 84–91% for 6–7 months.
- He said that we analyzed data on 1400 Indian people, which showed that even after 102 days of recovering from infection, the risk of being re-infected remains only 4.5%.
- He said that production of Kovaxin and Kovishield would increase by 20-25 million doses every month from July. Apart from this, we will have other vaccines like Zydus Cadila, Sputnik V, Johnson & Johnson in the coming months.
NEGVAC recommended last week
- The National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for Covid-19 (NEGVAC) last week recommended that people recovering from this infection should not undergo vaccination after three months.
- It was also suggested that such corona patients who have been given corona monoclonal antibodies or plasma should not undergo their vaccinations for three months from the date of discharge from the hospital.
- According to the new recommendations of NEGVAC, if a person becomes infected with the corona after taking the first dose of the vaccine, the second dose should be taken only three months after the cure.
