The pain of his descendants is visible after the Union Minister of State Jyotiraditya Scindia bowed at the tomb of Rani Laxmibai in Gwalior. Dainik Bhaskar has interviewed Yogesh Rao, the descendant of Laxmibai. Software engineer Yogesh Rao says that despite being the descendants of the queen, we are living a life of oblivion. We even have to buy tickets at the fort of Jhansi.

Yogesh said that there is no hesitation in going to Jyotiraditya’s samadhi. We are away from politics. Don’t even know much about it. Feeling must have come in Scindia’s mind, due to this he went to the samadhi. This is his personal decision.

Yogesh and his family currently in Nagpur

Yogesh Rao lives in Nagpur, Maharashtra. He is from the sixth generation of Lakshmibai. Yogesh says that historical things are also kept as heritage, but it is a pity that even being a descendant of the queen, she has to remain anonymous. People from the private sector come forward for respect, but there is no effort from the government to bring the historical family to light.

Arunrao Electrical Engineer of the fifth generation

Arun Rao Jhansiwale, the father of Yogesh Rao and the fifth generation representative of Lakshmibai, is a retired electrical engineer. They say we have to work undercover. Care has to be taken that work and employment should not be affected by the identity of the family. The 175th anniversary of Lakshmi Bai’s marriage was celebrated in Jhansi. Marathi speaking Gajanan Khanvilkar did the program. In November 2021, members of the freedom fighter family were honored in Gujarat.

Thus the cycle of oblivion went on

The process of oblivion of Laxmibai’s descendants is going on since her martyrdom. After the death of her son Damod Rao, Lakshmi Bai along with her husband Gangadhar Rao adopted Anand Rao. It was expected that Anand Rao would take over the legacy of Lakshmibai. Gangadhar Rao had coronated Anand Rao and renamed Anand Rao as Damodar Rao in the memory of Damodar Rao. The child who is seen on Lakshmibai’s back in the pictures is Damodar Rao. In 1858, Lakshmibai was injured while fighting the British army. He handed over his adopted son Damodar Rao to reliable soldiers. After the martyrdom of Lakshmibai, Damodar Rao wandered in the forest with the soldiers for two years. Later Damodar Rao was brought to Indore on the recommendation of King Prithvi Singh of Jhalawar Patan. A contract was signed with the British soldiers in Indore.

This is written in the contract

It was written in the contract that the son of the queen would be brought up under special protection. Lakshmibai’s property will be handed over to Damodar Rao after the age of 21. Yogesh Rao says that the contract with the British is in his minute book. They also call it the Blue Book. Even today its true copy is in the Museum of London. There is mention of Lakshmi Bai’s property.

not received government aid

The British had also implemented an annual pension of 10 thousand rupees to Damodar Rao. Damodar Rao’s son Laxman Rao also got pension. She was the third generation. After independence, Lakshmibai’s family did not get pension or other assistance. Laxman Rao made a living for the family by doing typing work in the court of Indore. Krishna Rao, son of Lakshmana Rao, was also a typist.

Arun Rao, daughter of Krishna Rao and representative of the fifth generation, worked as an engineer in the Madhya Pradesh Electric Board. Yogesh Rao of the sixth generation lives in Nagpur with his family. Besides his father, the family consists of a wife, a son and a daughter. The people of the neighborhood where they live also do not know much about them.
