All people coming in contact with a corona infected person will no longer need to undergo corona testing. In the new guideline, ICMR has made corona test necessary for only high-risk people coming in contact with corona infected. Many questions have arisen regarding this guideline of ICMR. Some experts believe that not testing all people who come in contact with corona infected will increase the risk of spreading corona, as well as it can be dangerous for the health of asymptomatic people.

Let us know why the decision to not test all the people who come in contact with the corona infected is dangerous? Why is it at risk of spreading corona? How is corona dangerous even for asymptomatic people?

No corona testing of everyone who comes in contact with corona infected

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has issued a new guideline on January 10 regarding corona testing in the country. In this guideline, the rules of corona testing have been changed, let’s take a look at it-

  • It will not be mandatory for everyone who comes in contact with a corona infected person to undergo a corona test. That is, for people who are asymptomatic or who do not have any symptoms, it is no longer necessary to get tested.
  • Patients who have been discharged or are being discharged from home isolation also do not need to be tested.
  • There will be no need for corona testing for those traveling from one state to another within the country itself.
  • There is no need for corona testing of asymptomatic patients admitted in the hospital.

Which people need testing?

The ICMR has mandated testing only for high-risk people – ie people above 60+ and already suffering from a disease.

In this, it has been said to be necessary to test only those people who have “cough, fever, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, breathlessness or other respiratory problems.

Testing of persons traveling abroad and international passengers arriving at Indian airports/ports.

Asymptomatic people are also at risk of spreading corona

According to experts, people who are asymptomatic can also spread the virus, even if they do not have symptoms or have been vaccinated.

Before ICMR, the Ministry of Health had also recently said in a new guideline that testing and isolation of asymptomatic people coming in contact with the infected person is not required.

According to the Ministry of Health, about 70% of the Omicron cases in the country are asymptomatic. In such a situation, the question is that without testing the asymptomatic people who come in contact with the corona infected, how will it be known who is corona infected and who is not?

According to a Times of India report, Dr. Naresh Gupta, Director, Maulana Azad Medical College, said, “Around 70% of Omicron patients are asymptomatic, and this variant has the potential to spread rapidly, thus after spreading in the community. It will spread like fire because you will never know if the next person is infected or not.

Therefore, not only corona testing of asymptomatic people, but it is also necessary to isolate and treat them to prevent the virus from spreading to others.

“It is not possible to test every asymptomatic in the country”

Since the beginning of the epidemic in India, till January 10, a total of 69.31 crore samples were tested. On January 10, 15.79 lakh samples were tested in the country. Testing has increased in the last few days at the fast pace of the spread of corona, which is likely to increase further in the coming days.

Some experts believe that one of the reasons for the decision not to conduct asymptomatic testing is to reduce the pressure on testing and also because of limited resources.

Is the reason for the decision not to test asymptomatic because of limited testing resources in the country? When we asked the same question to epidemiologist Dr Chandrakant Laharia, he said, “India does not have unlimited resources like US, UK, that every person can be tested.”

“Its aim is to make the best utilization of the available resources. Although there is no shortage of resources, but it is necessary to use them in the best way. That is, due to more testing of asymptomatic people, symptomatic people should not be deprived of testing.

Will corona spread by not testing asymptomatic?

On this, Dr. Laharia said, “Theoretically, this increases the risk of spreading corona, but it is also difficult to know the status of everyone’s infection through testing. In such a situation, not testing will not make much difference.

How accurate is it not to test asymptomatic people?

On this, Dr. Laharia said, “Earlier there was more transmission of symptomatic disease and virus from corona, then testing was beneficial. Now the disease has spread more. In such a situation, it is difficult to identify every asymptomatic and testing does not stop the spread of the disease.

What should people who come in contact with a corona infected person do?

To this, Dr. Laharia said, “If you have come in contact with corona infected and you have mild symptoms, then you may have corona, in such a situation, 7 days isolation should be followed.” If an asymptomatic person wants to get himself tested, then he can do so, there is no restriction on testing of such persons in the guideline.

America is considering testing before ending home isolation

White House Tom Medical Advisor Anthony Fauci has said that the US is also considering adding a negative corona test rule before the end of the 5-day home isolation period of asymptomatic patients.

The US recently reduced home isolation from 10 to 5 days and did not specify the need for corona testing to end isolation.

This rule of America was criticized by many experts, after which the US government is now considering getting corona testing done before ending the isolation.

Why are questions arising on the decision of the government?

According to the definition of the World Health Organization (WHO), asymptomatic cases are cases in which a person is confirmed to be infected with Kovid-19 in a laboratory but the person does not have any symptoms. The special thing is that corona-infected people can transmit the virus even when they have symptoms and do not have symptoms.

Not every person infected with corona or found to be positive in the test necessarily shows symptoms, that is, many people infected with corona can be asymptomatic or asymptomatic. Such people are called asymptomatic carriers.

Therefore, people without symptoms or asymptomatic people infected with corona should also be isolated, only then the chain of virus transmission can be broken.

Why are asymptomatic people also at risk of life from corona?

  • There are many such studies which show that although corona infected asymptomatic people may not show symptoms, their body is affected by this virus.
  • A report by National Geographic in 2021 mentions a report of the ill-effects of corona on asymptomatic people.
  • A report titled ‘Narrative Review of Asymptomatic Diseases’ published in the Annals of Internal Medicine mentions a study done on 104 corona infected. Of these 104 people, 76 were asymptomatic, but their CT scans showed that about 54 percent had lung problems.
  • Not only this, the scans of the chests of the asymptomatic people included in this study showed problems like blood clotting and swelling in the heart and blood of those people.
  • Several cases of blood clotting in the kidneys, lungs and brain of such Kovid-infected asymptomatic people have been mentioned in the Thrombosis Journal and several other studies.
  • When a blood clot occurs, blood gets trapped in a vein, making it difficult for those organs to receive blood and affecting their function – which puts them at risk of stroke, heart attack and death.
