Actress Kangana Ranaut has approached the Bombay High Court challenging the criminal defamation proceedings by the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate, Mumbai on a complaint by lyricist Javed Akhtar. In this case, the actress got bail in March 2020. During that time he had moved the court to quash the bailable warrant issued in the case. This warrant was issued against the actress after she did not appear in the court during the hearing.

Kangana is accused of trying to malign Javed by making baseless allegations against him. In fact, despite summoning the actress, the court had issued a warrant for not appearing in the court. However, now the court has granted him bail.

The case was registered in November last year

  • Javed Akhtar had filed a private complaint on 2 November 2020 through his lawyer Niranjan Mundargi. In this, he had leveled charges against actress Kangana Ranaut under sections 499 (defamation) and section 500 (punishment for defamation) of the Indian Panel Code.
  • Akhtar said in his complaint that he was a self-reliant person who had reached Mumbai on October 4, 1964 with Rs 27, 2 pairs of clothes and some books. At that time he was 19 years old. Regarding Akhtar’s reputation in the petition, “The appellant is one of the senior actors of the film industry. He has worked for more than 55 years in his career. This is a rare feat in itself. He was from March 2010 to March. Was a member of Rajya Sabha till 2016.
  • Akhtar claims that in the 57-minute-long interview, Kangana is seen speaking on the circumstances related to Sushant’s death without any evidence or knowledge. His petition further states that statements were made against Javed during this interview.
  • Akhtar had reportedly accused Kangana of falsely accusing her during the interview of threatening her to withdraw the case filed against Hrithik Roshan.
  • Akhtar had said in his complaint that Kangana had told him part of the suicide gang in the interview. Kangana had also alleged that Akhtar had threatened her saying that if she did not withdraw the case, she would have no option but to commit suicide.
  • Akhtar claims that due to this comment of Kangana, he received many threatening phone calls and messages. He was also trolled on social media. According to him, his reputation has got spoiled because of this comment.

Kangana has canceled the bailable warrant

Following Javed’s complaint, the Metropolitan Magistrate Court had issued a bailable warrant against Kangana. Kangana approached the court after her warrant was canceled on bail and surety.

In an interview to an entertainment website, Kangana had said that Javed Akhtar had threatened her by calling her home. According to Kangana, Akhtar had said that Rakesh Roshan and his family are very big people. If they don’t apologize to him, they can put him in jail.
