Rakesh Asthana, an IPS (Indian Police Service) officer of Gujarat cadre, has been made the new Police Commissioner of Delhi. The information about his appointment came to light at 10 pm on Tuesday. Asthana was posted as DG (Director General) of BSF (Border Security Force). He was appointed to this post on 18 August 2020. The special thing is that he was going to retire on July 31.

ITBP DG Surjit Singh Deswal has been given additional charge of BSF. At present 80 thousand jawans are deployed in Delhi Police. Earlier, Senior IPS Office Balaji Srivastava took over as the Police Commissioner of Delhi on 30 June 2021. He got this responsibility after the retirement of former commissioner SN Srivastava.

Asthana also held the charge of NCB
Asthana also held the additional charge of DG of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) before being made the DG of BSF. He was also holding the charge of DG, Bureau of Civil Aviation Security.

Was in discussion due to controversy with CBI Director Alok Verma
A 1984 batch IPS of Gujarat cadre, Rakesh Asthana had a dispute with the Director, Alok Verma when he was posted as Special Director in CBI. Both the officers went to court regarding this. Later, the Supreme Court intervened, but after that there was an inquiry into the allegations of corruption against Rakesh Asthana in the CBI itself. However, the CBI gave him a clean-chit, after which he was made the chief of both BSF and NCB.
