Social organization Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram has appreciated the announcement made by the Central Government to give rights over forests to the tribal society under the Major Forest Rights Act, saying that this will give the right to community forest resources to the gram sabhas.

Jagdish Kukreja, the general secretary of the organization, has said that Union Minister of Tribal Affairs Arjun Munda and Union Forest Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar have issued a joint letter by the principal secretaries of both the ministries declaring the tribal society to have rights over the forests.

Its main objective is that under the Forest Rights Act, the right of community forest resources should be given to the Gram Sabha. The organization had been making such demands for many years. This is a good step taken by the government in the right direction for the tribal society. The work of implementing this law rests with the tribal department.

The organization said that all the state governments should join hands with the forest and tribal departments in their respective states to take the rights of this community forest resources to every village and gram sabha of the state as per the guidelines of both the ministries. While strengthening the Gram Sabha, give them technical and financial support, so that the entire tribal society of the country can be made self-reliant and self-respecting.
