NEW DELHI: Tata Motors designers and engineers are on an experimentation roll lately. Persona adventure edition of Safari to Dark range for ‘new forever’ cars, the homegrown carmaker has now fiddled with the design of its entry-level hatch and produced something which is highly subjective to look at. Tiago NRG is here.
Overview:
The NRG is freshly baked with a host of cosmetic and structural changes and is based on XZ+/XZA+ (dual-tone) trim. For the exteriors, there is a heavy black cladding surrounding the sheet on the lower half. Front and rear bumpers are beefed up with the addition of grey skid plates.

Door handles are finished in black and NRG gets auto-foldable mirrors (ORVMs). Sporty roof rail is also helping the NRG look taller than the regular variant. Tata has offered bi-coloured wheel cap over the 15-inch steel wheels.
The shiny black grille sits nicely on the lip and amplifies the overtly aggressive design. Similarly, a black panel runs right through the middle of the tailgate, which seems a little afterthought.
Structural changes:
The hatchback is based on Tata’s XO platform, and its 4-star crash safety rating is a massive selling point among rivals, which have mostly fared poorly in similar tests. NRG variant, or ‘Urban Toughroader’ as Tata likes to call it, gets 11 mm greater ground clearance at 181 mm over the regular variant.

The company also claims to have retuned the suspensions, so that NRG can be able to take a tougher beating over bad roads.
Engine and price:
Tiago NRG gets the same 86-horsepower, 1.2-litre Revotron engine. The 3-cylinder petrol engine gets the option of 5-speed manual and 5-speed automatic transmissions.
The automatic and manual variants are priced at Rs 7.09 lakh and Rs 6.57 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The NRG trims are Rs 4,500 and Rs 7,500 expensive over corresponding dual-tone automatic and manual trims of regular Tiago.
Interior:
Features in NRG include a push-button start, reverse parking camera with guiding lights, and Harman Kardon stereo set up. Otherwise, the seats are laid in all-black fabric with white stitching.

TOI Auto take:
How much more capable NRG is over the regular Tiago will be once revealed after the drive. For a fact, the design changes are drastic and remain highly subjective. That said, the price increase is in line with the features and structural upgrades.
