NEW DELHI: Volkswagen on Thursday launched its compact SUV Taigun in India, starting at Rs. lakh (ex-showroom).
Ashish Gupta, brand director, VW India, announced the Taigun has received 12,221 bookings before the price reveal.
Entering the market just ahead of the festive period, Taigun is set to compete with the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and the upcoming MG Astor. Taigun and recently launched Skoda Kushaq share parts in plenty, ranging from engine-transmission combinations to platform.
Taigun offers the choice of a 1-litre turbo-petrol or 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine option. The smaller engine puts out 115PS and 178 Nm of peak torque while mated to either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed torque converter. While manual is common for 1.5-litre TSI, it also gets the superior 7-speed DSG. This engine generates 150PS and 250Nm.
Taigun is based on the MQB-AO-IN platform and the company claims to have achieved 95% localisation.
In terms of design, Taigun draws inspiration from the Tiguan and T-Roc. The upright face packs chrome slates, matching VW’s classic design ethos. The bling of chrome wraps around the foglamps, which sits under the chunky headlamp units.
With the option of 16 and 17-inch wheels, Taigun alongside Kushaq boasts of a segment-leading wheelbase of 2,651 mm. The tail is peppered with a connected LED light strip, which VW likes to call infinity lights. The boot space stands at 385 litres. The range-topping GT variant has red embellishments on the brake calipers, logos on side profile and on the grille. Taigun will be available in 5 colour options.
Taigun’s top trim packs features like fully-digital instrumentation, connected 10-inch infotainment, ambient lighting, sun roof, auto-dimming inside mirrors, front seat ventilation and wireless charging.
VW offers 40+ safety features including ESC, up to 6 airbags, reverse camera, brake disc wiping and hill hold assist.
The company is offering 4 years/1 lakh kilometre warranty on Taigun, which is extendable up to 7 years/1.5 lakh. Service value packages for manual trims start at Rs 21,999. Breaking down the service charges, VW also claims to offer 37 paise/kilometre for 1.0-litre variants and 40 paise/kilometre for 1.5-litre variants.
