According to the petition, in 2019, the Supreme Court had ordered the Center and all the states to fill the vacant posts in the information commissions.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday expressed displeasure over not implementing the 2019 order to fill up vacant posts in the Central Information Commission and State Information Commission. A bench headed by Justice S Abdul Nazeer has sought a status report from the central and all state governments on the implementation of this order. The Center and the states have been asked to submit their reports on this in a month.

RTI activist Anjali Bhardwaj has filed a petition seeking to fill up the vacant posts in the Central Information Commission and the State Information Commission. According to the petition, in 2019, the Supreme Court had ordered the Center and all the states to fill the vacant posts in information commissions. Petitioner’s counsel Prashant Bhushan said that despite the orders of the Supreme Court, till now 3 posts are vacant in the CIC. The situation is similar in the State Information Commissions also.
