Nationalist Congress Party- Sharad Chandra Pawar chief Sharad Pawar has expressed surprise over the Election Commission’s decision to hand over the party symbol of NCP to Ajit faction. He said at an event in Pune on Sunday – The Commission has not only snatched away the symbol, but has also given our party to someone else. It had never happened before that the party was taken from the hands of the person who founded it and handed over to someone else.

In fact, the Election Commission had said on Tuesday (February 6) that Ajit Pawar faction is the real NCP. After 10 hearings lasting 6 months, the party name and election symbol were given to Ghadi Ajit faction. After this, the Commission had given the name NCP Sharad Chandra Pawar to Sharad Pawar’s faction.

Sharad Pawar has challenged the decision of the Election Commission in the court. He said that I am confident that people will not support the decision of the Election Commission, against which we have moved the Supreme Court. For every party, its ideology is more important than its symbol.

Sharad claimed that the ED has conducted investigations across the country, in which 6000 cases have been registered from 2005 to 2023. But, results could be obtained only in 25 cases. Opposition political leaders were involved in 85 percent of the cases.

Caveat of NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) in Supreme Court before Sharad Pawar
On February 7, lawyer Abhikalp Pratap Singh from NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court. Ajit faction approached the Supreme Court before Sharad faction. On the other hand, Clyde Crasto, spokesperson of Nationalist Congress Party Sharadchandra Pawar had said on February 7 that he will go to the Supreme Court.

Crasto had said – There is a directive of the Supreme Court which says that the legislative party cannot be chosen over the political party. Therefore, if the decision goes against the decision of the Supreme Court then we will approach the Supreme Court.

Ajit said- everyone has the right to demand justice
When Sharad Pawar group approached the Supreme Court on the Election Commission’s decision, Ajit Pawar had said that everyone has the right to seek justice. This decision has come in our favor. If they go to the Supreme Court, we will give a proper reply through lawyers. More than 50 MLAs, most of the district heads are with us. Majority is given importance in democracy. Therefore the Election Commission has given us the name and election symbol NCP.

After the Election Commission's decision, Ajit Pawar's supporters celebrated at the NCP office in Mumbai.

Who said what on the Election Commission’s decision…

  • Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde- Majority is important in democracy. Ajit Pawar got the name and symbol on the basis of merit. He got it on the basis of majority, my best wishes to him. The name and symbol of Shiv Sena was given to us by the Election Commission on the basis of merit. Only majority matters. Majority is still in the government, we will get more than 45 out of 48 Lok Sabha seats in the state. A government will be formed with majority in the assembly, a working government will be formed. People give importance to work. Development is needed, our government is doing all-round development.
  • Sharad Pawar’s daughter and MP Supriya Sule- I think what happened to Shiv Sena is happening with us today. Therefore this is not a new order. Only the names have changed, but the decision is old. Sharad will rebuild the party.
  • Sharad Pawar faction leader Jitendra Awhad– This had to happen, we already knew. Today he (Ajit Pawar) has strangulated Sharad Pawar politically. This is a matter of embarrassment for the Election Commission. Sharad Pawar is a phoenix. He will rise again from the ashes. We still have power, because we have Sharad Pawar. We will go to the Supreme Court.
  • Sharad Pawar faction leader Jayant Patil- We will approach the Supreme Court against this decision of the Election Commission, that is our last hope.
  • Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis- Our Grand Alliance’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Dada has been given the NCP party, clock election symbol by the Election Commission, I congratulate him.
  • Congress leader Ashok Chavan- The decision given by the Election Commission regarding NCP is not an unexpected decision, what happened with Shiv Sena is happening with NCP. The final decision will be taken in the court of public opinion.
  • Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole, NCP has taken the same decision which the Central Government had given in writing to the Election Commission.

NCP limited to only 2 states
NCP was stripped of its national party status on April 10, 2023, based on the then-current election results of 2000. Now it is recognized as a regional party only in Maharashtra and Nagaland.

Ajit had said on July 5- Now I am NCP Chief
Ajit Pawar joined the Shinde government in Maharashtra along with 8 NCP MLAs on July 2, 2023. He claimed the support of 40 NCP MLAs along with him. Ajit has been made Deputy CM in the coalition government.

After this, Ajit had announced the removal of Sharad Pawar from the post of NCP national president on 5 July 2023. He had declared himself the new national president. Ajit said that this decision was taken in the party’s national executive meeting on June 30, 2023 in Mumbai.

Ajit Pawar had sent a letter to the Election Commission on June 30 expressing his claim on the NCP nomination. At the same time, Sharad faction leader Jayant Patil had demanded from the Commission on July 3 to disqualify 31 MLAs including 9 ministers including Ajit.

After rebellion from Sharad, Ajit had claimed on June 30 that he had the majority. Therefore he has authority over the party. By filing the petition in the Commission, Ajit had presented more than 9 thousand documents.
